City manager selection update

Commissioners move forward in search
for new city manager

City commissioners narrowed the field in the city manager search at their Wednesday night meeting. The top five candidates are Deric Feacher, Caryn Gardner-Young, Thomas J. Hutka, Terrence R. Moore and Terry K. Suggs.

A candidate forum is being planned for Saturday, March 20, at the city’s Midtown Cultural & Educational Center located at 925 George W. Engram Blvd. At the forum, the public will have an opportunity to hear from the candidates and also ask questions. For those who are unable to attend in person, plans are being made for the forum to be broadcast on www.codb.us/DBTV and Spectrum Channel 490.

The vacancy for city manager was created when current City Manager Jim Chisholm announced last March his planned retirement following nearly 17 years of service to the city.

A city manager acts as the chief executive officer for the city, executing the policy goals set by the City Commission, overseeing all daily operations, representing the city to other governments and performing other executive duties as outlined in the City Charter. The city manager is hired directly by the City Commission.

Fire Department launches new program to fight opioid addiction

The Daytona Beach Fire Department launched a new program aimed at helping individuals suffering from substance abuse and addiction. The Drug Abuse Response Team, also known as DART, is a collaborative effort between the fire department’s Community Paramedicine Program, the Daytona Beach Police Department and Stewart-Marchman Alliance. The goal is to identify drug users and assist in bringing them to recovery programs directly from the field.

The team personally visits people who have recently overdosed and provides them with an informational packet that includes resources on substance abuse, contact information for local assistance programs and Narcan Nasal Spray that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose in an emergency situation. DART encourages those suffering to take advantage of a program in order to overcome drug addiction.

If you know someone who may benefit from DART or would like more information, please call the fire department at (386) 671-4010. More information about the program can be found online.
