Local traffic information for Speedweeks and Daytona 500

The Daytona International Speedway will be the epicenter of motorsports racing this weekend culminating with the Daytona 500, starting at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

To keep traffic disruption at a minimum for visitors and residents, here are some helpful roadway details when making travel plans. Daytona Beach Police Department will have special traffic patterns for the races through the weekend as needed to help with the flow of traffic.

If you’re not going to the races, we recommend avoiding the roads around Daytona International Speedway, if possible, especially International Speedway Boulevard (U.S. 92).

New redistricting webpage launched

An informational and interactive webpage was created to explain the city’s redistricting process, timeline, requirements and population statistics. The page also includes a brief survey designed to gather residents’ feedback on possible “communities of interest” that should be considered in the redistricting process and asks about preferences for public review.

Initiative encourages investment in city’s core area

Building permit and inspection fees continue to be waived for commercial and residential properties within the borders of Mason Avenue to Shady Place and Nova Road to Ridgewood Avenue. Since the fees have been waived, the city has seen a sharp increase in projects like roof replacements, electrical and fire suppression system upgrades, and new fence, door, window and air conditioning unit installations. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to, interior renovations, replacing or repairing a roof, adding fencing, improving or adding a driveway and adding windows or doors. Ineligible projects include, but are not limited to, building a new structure separate from an existing building or any new single-family home.

Permit applications are available online and can also be picked up at the Permits and Licensing office at City Hall located at 301 S. Ridgewood Ave. Completed applications can be dropped off at Permits and Licensing from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, faxed to (386) 671-8149 or emailed to Contact_PnL@codb.us. The suspension of fees was approved by city commissioners for a two-year period from October 2021 to October 2023.

Free baseball clinics offered in March

Hit a home run when you sign up your kids for the city’s baseball league! Open to youth ages 4 to 12, register at www.codb.us/Activities.

Free t-ball clinics will be offered Feb. 21-23 and Feb. 28-March 2 at the Derbyshire Sports Complex, 849 Derbyshire Road. The clinics are from 5 to 7 p.m.

Free baseball clinics will be offered in March to teach kids the sport's fundamentals. Participants will learn hitting, base running, throwing, catching and fielding. The clinics are 5 to 7 p.m. March 1-3, March 8-10 and March 15-17 at Bethune Point Park, 11 Bellevue Ave. This year’s baseball clinics and season are sponsored by the Daytona Tortugas and Tortugas Care Foundation.

Registration is open for annual Easter Beach Run

Registration is open for this year’s annual Easter Beach Run, which is Saturday, April 16.

The race begins at 11 a.m. on the beach behind the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort located at 100 N. Atlantic Ave. Participants of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy a scenic view while traveling out and back for the 2-mile or 4-mile run/walk. Kids can participate in the 1/4-mile race, 100 and 50-yard dash. There also will be fun for the entire family with treats and plenty of prizes from sponsors and vendors .
