Watch June 15 City Commission meeting online

City commissioners met Wednesday night and people who were not able to attend can watch a replay of the meeting on the city’s website.

Commissioners approved a budget amendment to account for increases to fuel and capital projects and renewed the lease agreement for Zoom-Air Daytona Beach at Tuscawilla Park. The amendment to decrease the retirement age to 20 years for the fire and police pension plan and the ordinance to increase the hourly rate for police officers who provide service to bars, lounges and nightclubs within the core beachside area was read into the record by the City Clerk. The City Commission will take a final vote to approve the salary increases and other incentives at their July 6 meeting.

City Commission to meet for special meeting June 29

There will be a special City Commission meeting to discuss the pre-suit settlement agreement for the Bridgeport Heights river approach at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at City Hall.

There will be a sign-in sheet available for those wishing to comment. It will be in the second-floor lobby, outside of Commission Chambers prior to the meeting. Speakers must be signed in by 5:45 p.m.   

The meeting will be broadcast live on Spectrum channel 490 or from the city's website.

Meet new tennis manager Steve Cook

For the first time in 20 years, the Florida Tennis Center is under new leadership with the hire of Steve Cook, who has been involved with the game of tennis for most of his life. He has more than 10 years of experience managing tennis centers.
 
Before moving to the sunshine state, he coached at the colligate level at Converse College and managed the country's largest indoor and outdoor tennis center, Greater Midland Tennis Center in Michigan. Excited to grow memberships, Cook also wants to add more junior and adult programs to the tennis center.

Youth can practice their football skills at this year's Bruce McNorton Football Camp, which is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Daytona Stadium at 3917 LPGA Blvd.

The free camp is for youth ages 6 to 18. Youth can register in advance or onsite at the camp.

The best tribute bands are showcasing their talents every weekend this summer at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. Performing this weekend are:

  • The Motowners: A tribute to Motown classics
    7:15 p.m. Friday
    The Motowners show is a fantastic tribute to the many artists and great songs from the classic Motown years. Expect to hear smash hits including songs by the Temptations, The Four Tops, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.
  • Hotter than July: A tribute to Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie & The Commodores
    7:15 p.m. Saturday -- Fireworks begin after the show at 9:45 p.m.
    The Hotter Than July is a Stevie Wonder tribute band that is a high energy, soulful group of talented and experienced musicians. Led by professional musician Gerry Williams, an unbounded vocalist and percussionist who brings funk on the keys, this is a band you can't help but get on your feet and groove to.

The concerts are free to the public with the option to purchase VIP seats for $10 plus applicable surcharges. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs to the concerts or purchase VIP tickets, which include a seat. VIP tickets can be purchased online or between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Peabody Box Office at 600 Auditorium Blvd. in Daytona Beach.
