Unsanctioned truck event is this weekend

An unsanctioned truck event is expected to begin Friday, Oct. 21, continue through Sunday, Oct. 23. Residents should expect traffic congestion on the beachside, mainly North and South Atlantic Avenue and the bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway. Main thoroughfares potentially impacted with traffic congestion include International Speedway Boulevard, Nova Road and U.S. 1.

All bridges will remain open throughout the weekend; however, if bridges become backed up, residents are encouraged to use the Main Street Bridge. No pink passes will be issued.

Additional law enforcement will be present to assist in managing the increased traffic and keeping the community safe. Law enforcement will be utilizing the recently enacted law regarding the special event zone. Signs will be posted, and the Volusia County has declared the beachside a special event zone for the duration of the event.

Former baseball field site recognized by state, marker unveiling Sunday

Local baseball historians, Volusia County-Daytona Beach NAACP and the city partnered to get official state recognition for the Daytona Beach site where Jackie Robinson trained before playing in the first integrated professional baseball game at what was then called City Island Ballpark. Mike Kaszuba and Jim Bard, members of the Society for American Baseball Research, interviewed residents who remember Kelly Field and Jackie Robinson. Through hours of research, they found evidence that Jackie Robinson and Black teammate Johnny Wright trained and played games on Kelly Field in Cypress Street Park, near the corner of George W. Engram Boulevard and Keech Street.

Although Kelly Field no longer exists, the former site will be recognized with a permanent marker through the Florida Historical Marker Program, a part of the Florida Division of Historical Resources. The marker will be unveiled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at the Midtown Cultural and Educational Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd. The public and locals who remember Kelly Field are encouraged to attend.
