Mainland High School Champs Parade is today

Beach Street is the place to be at 6 p.m. today as the city hosts the Mainland High School Champs Parade. Join us as we congratulate the Bucs on their many athletic accomplishments this year including the girls basketball team being crowned the Class 5A State Champion for the first time in school history!

The parade, which has about 60 participants, will start at Brown & Brown Insurance and travel south on Beach Street to Jackie Robinson Parkway where we will have a celebration for these student athletes at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Beach Street will close from Main Street to Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. starting at 3:30 p.m. As guests arrive for the parade, motorists can expect Beach Street to have limited access from Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. to Orange Avenue after 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m., Beach Street will be closed from Main Street to Orange Avenue for the parade. Message boards are on the roadways advising motorists to use Palmetto Avenue as an alternate route (instead of Beach Street). There will be detours directing motorists to use Main Street or Veterans Memorial bridges during the parade. Roadways should reopen about 7 p.m.

The parade is sponsored in part by the Daytona Tortugas, 93.1 Coast Country, HOT 94.1, 95.7 The Hog and 103.3 The Vibe.

Dr. Josie Rogers’ home being renovated

Dr. Josie Rogers’ home being renovated

One of the oldest homes in the city, the Dr. Josie Rogers' house, is undergoing extensive renovations to transform it into a space to welcome, educate and offer respite to visitors of the $31 million Riverfront Esplanade in downtown Daytona Beach. Located on the north side of the 28-acre riverfront sanctuary, the two-story structure was badly damaged by last year’s storms. Renovations include new exterior siding, windows, doors, interior walls, ceilings, restrooms and a 900-square-foot porch; upgraded electrical and plumbing; refinished floors; an HVAC system replacement; as well as making the 144-year-old structure’s access ADA compliant.

Renovation work should be completed by the end of the year, and in addition to historic displays about Dr. Rogers’ life and career, the home is expected to feature a commercial element with food and beverage service to attract visitors.
