Join us at the Crab & Seafood Festival Saturday

Daytona Beach’s annual Crab & Seafood Festival is happening Saturday, April 29. Bring the family and friends and enjoy delicious dishes, live music, local vendors and a Kids Zone with a 360-degree photo booth, carnival games, caricature artist and face painting. The festival is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Charles Street. Live music includes performances by the Love Band and Saxman Fuqua.

Additionally, there will be local accessory vendors selling a variety of crafts and merchandise and Midtown Cafe & Grill and A Golden Taste of Jamaican Foods & Treats will be open on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard. The Crab & Seafood Festival is presented by Divine Designs. 

During the festival, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Charles Street will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Make sure you stop by the city’s Yvonne Scarlett-Golden Cultural & Educational Center by Friday to check out “Cultuvue.” This exhibit is produced by Kenneth Grant Inzpirations and features an artistic, creative expression of black culture, utilizing photographic, interactive and educational components. The exhibit is on display 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. YSG is at 1000 Vine St.

Free Housing Fair & Financial Wellness Clinic Saturday

If you are thinking about purchasing a home, stop by the free Housing Fair & Financial Wellness Clinic Saturday, April 29, at Allen Chapel AME Church, 580 George W. Engram Blvd. There will be something for everyone at the clinic that will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free credit reports and mini-classes/workshops covering financial literacy topics will be offered throughout the day. Learn about the home-buying process, new mortgage loan products, down payment assistance programs and new affordable housing initiatives from industry professionals. This event is hosted by Mid-Florida Housing Partnership, Inc. and Allen Daytona Development Inc.

The city is offering a Baby & Me swim program starting Saturday, May 6. Sessions will be 10 to 10:45 a.m. every Saturday at Cypress Aquatic Center (981 George W. Engram Blvd.) The swim program is offered for youth ages 6 months to 3-years old. The session fee is $30 per month and registration is online. Financial scholarships are available for qualifying youth. The Baby & Me Swim Program is sponsored in part by AdventHealth, Humana and the Kiwanis Club.

City Commission to meet Wednesday

The next meeting of the city Commission will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 3. The agenda will be available online Friday. People can sign up online to receive agendas via text or email. 

Registration for youth summer camp opens Monday

Registration for youth summer camp opens Monday

Starting Monday, people can register their kids to participate in this year’s summer camp program, which will be from Monday, June 5, through Friday, Aug. 4. 

The 9-week program is for youth ages 5 to 16 and will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the following locations:

Cherry Cultural & Educational Center (925 George W. Engram Blvd.)
Palm Terrace Elementary School (1825 Dunn Ave.)
Schnebly Recreation Center (1101 N. Atlantic Ave.)
Sunnyland Recreation Center (825 Washington St.)
Turie T. Small Elementary School (800 South St.)
Yvonne Scarlett-Golden Cultural & Educational Center (1000 Vine St.)

Breakfast and lunch, sports, crafts, field trips and games are provided at the summer camps.

Registration is first come, first served. People can register youth at City Hall (301 S. Ridgewood Ave.) in the Parks & Recreation office on the first floor. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are not required to register youth and the registration fee has been waived for this year. The cost for the summer camp is $270 per youth and there is a 10% discount for siblings. A weekly payment plan of $30 per week is available. For more information, call (386) 671-8250.

Scholarships are available online through the Volusia County Community Assistance Division for qualifying youth. The city’s summer camp program is sponsored in part by AdventHealth, Humana and the Kiwanis Club.

City lights up landmark Bandshell in support of Marsy’s Law

The Daytona Beach Oceanfront Bandshell is glowing purple at night to promote victims’ rights under Florida’s Marsy’s Law. The landmark’s lighting also coincides with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is April 23-29. Passed by voters in 2018, Marsy's Law for Florida ensures rights and protections for crime victims.

Adult 5-on-5 Basketball Tournament

The City of Daytona Beach is hosting an adult 5-on-5 basketball tournament May 6-7 at the Cherry Cultural & Educational Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd. Games begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be played in a double-elimination style. Rosters are limited to 10 players per team and the registration fee is $325 per team. Games will be 18-minute halves and each team will receive two timeouts per half. For more information, call (386) 631-2445.
