Feb. 4, 2026In today’s City Manager’s Update newsletter, the following topics are highlighted: - Celebrating Black History - In partnership with the Midtown Community Development Corporation, the city is honoring 12 community leaders with custom, double-sided street banners displayed throughout February along International Speedway Boulevard, from Nova Road to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- Sesquicentennial Business Milestone Series: The series kicks off featuring Big Shark Gift Shop, a family-owned business founded in 1960 that has grown into a 13,000-square-foot destination for more than 60 years.
- 2026’s State of the City is now available: The digital report and companion video highlight major infrastructure investments and neighborhood quality-of-life improvements.
- Residential Reconstruction Program: A new home on North Keech Street closed late last month as part of the city’s program to replace unsafe housing with safe, modern homes for income-qualified residents. Similar projects are underway at 351 Garden St. and 831 Madison St.
- In the Works – Project updates:
- Bookland Bridge (City Island to Riverfront Esplanade): 100% complete; repairs to storm-damaged boardwalk, drainage/durability upgrades, handrail repairs, and new light fixtures; ADA compliant.
- Midtown Recreation Center Playground & Fitness Equipment (Cypress Park): In final stages; upgrades supported by a $375,028 grant; final phase includes an ADA-compliant sidewalk for access.
- Joe Harris Park perimeter fencing: In final stages; 6-foot fencing and gates to enhance safety and access control; expected completion within about two weeks.
